Conditional Sentences

In this post we will learn about conditional sentences. In any competitive exam like SSC ,Banking etc. A no. of times question on this part of grammar are asked. we will learn about the basic structure of conditional sentence.

first point to remember is conditional sentence start with 'IF' statement.

Conditional Sentences are also known as Conditional Clauses or If Clauses. They are used to express that the action in the main clause (without if) can only take place if a certain condition (in the clause with if) is fulfilled. There are three types of Conditional Sentences.

e.g if you work hard, you will pass in your exam.

In the above sentence it is very clear that the result of hard work is getting  passed in exam. So hard work should be in present tense whereas, pass in exam will be future.

So, we get a general structure for this type of sentences. below is the structure,

SIMPLE TENSE    -   FUTURE TENSE.

SIMPLE PAST       -    WOULD.

PAST PERFECT    -     WOULD HAVE.

let us take example for the above said structures,

1. if he came to me, i would offered him some money.

2. if you had worked hard, you would have passed the exam.

3. if i go to delhi, i shall meet him.

In SSC and Various Other Exams you are asked tick out the incorrect part in a sentence,

If i will go to delhi, i will meet him.

in the above sentence we can easily find out which part is wrong i.e, in condition clause, if i will go to delhi it should be if i go to delhi.
